Harrington's blunder, Davis' three help Clippers top Knicks in OT

Basketball Betting Lines

02/12/2009 - Los Angeles, CA (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Baron Davis hit a crucial three-pointer in the closing seconds of overtime and the Los Angeles Clippers took advantage of a costly technical foul call on Al Harrington near the end of regulation to beat New York, 128-124, securing their 10th straight home win over the Knicks.

Davis finished with 13 points and a career-high 20 assists, as the Clippers headed to the All-Star break with three wins in their last four games, but are 13-40 overall.

Eric Gordon posted 30 points, while former Knick Zach Randolph tallied 22 points and 15 rebounds for Los Angeles, which also received a career-best 23 points from Steve Novak and 20 from Al Thornton.

"I was pleased by the outcome," said Clippers coach Mike Dunleavy. "Our guys did a good job of hanging in there. We had a lot of guys contribute."

Nate Robinson had a spectacular game with 33 points, a career-high 15 assists, and also nine rebounds and five steals, but the Knicks lost their sixth consecutive game and moved to the midseason break with a 21-31 record.

Wilson Chandler scored 27 for the Knicks. Harrington ended with 19 points and 11 rebounds, while David Lee scored 17 to go with 12 boards. Jared Jeffries added 16 points and 10 rebounds.

Each team fired up a massive amount of three-pointers, 70 in all. The Knicks went 8-of-33 from beyond the arc, while the Clippers set a franchise-record with 37 attempts, making 15, from long distance.

"We liked the quick pace," said Davis. "We have guys that can open it up from the outside. The quicker pace we play the deadlier we are."

But it was the play of Harrington near the end of regulation that drew the ire of Knicks head coach Mike D'Antoni.

Randolph's tough shot in the lane brought LA within 108-107 with 47.1 seconds left, and Harrington got an offensive rebound at the other end and jammed with two hands with 25 seconds remaining. But after dunking, Harrington pulled himself up on the rim and then used both his hands to slap the backboard.

D'Antoni was clearly upset at Harrington after a technical foul was called, and Novak sank the ensuing free throw.

Randolph then tied the game with a left-handed shot in the lane with 11.2 seconds left, and the game went into overtime after Robinson's runner caromed off the rim.

The Clippers scored the first five points of overtime, but the Knicks came within 123-121 when Robinson made a layup with 29.5 seconds left.

Davis then stepped back and drilled a three-pointer over Jeffries with 7.5 seconds left, but Robinson's three-pointer with five seconds later tightened the game again. Fred Jones sealed LA's win by sinking two free throws with 3.9 seconds left.

"It's a weird road trip," said D'Antoni. "We should have won two out of three. We're giving games away. It was a good effort, but not good enough."

The Knicks were ahead 34-28 after the first quarter, but the gap stood at 59-58 at the half. Thornton's jumper at the end of the third had the hosts trailing 86-85.

Game Notes

LA's Marcus Camby was out due to a migraine headache, while New York's Chris Duhon was sidelined due to a sprained ankle...Jones finished with 14 points...Harrington went 1-of-10 from three-point range, while Novak was 6-of-8.

Big Ten Conference odds

Teams that should be in: Michigan State, Indiana
Work left to do: Illinois, Purdue, Michigan, Iowa

Behind the big two, the pecking order might be in a bit of flux. Has Michigan State passed Indiana after handling the Hoosiers in East Lansing? Where is Illinois in that mix? What looked like a four-big league last week could be morphing into five -- and even six is not unthinkable at this point if everything breaks right.

Should be in:

Michigan State [21-8 (8-6), RPI: 20, SOS: 15] The Spartans made it four-for-four on the homestand, a gigantic accomplishment that leaves them in extremely good shape. MSU is only 1-6 on the road and is at Michigan and at Wisconsin to close things out, meaning the date with the Wolverines on Tuesday looms very, very large. Beating Texas early will hold up well, as will the rout of Bradley and the win over BYU, but will 8-8 be enough? It very well could be, as the computer numbers are good, but why chance it?

Indiana [18-9 (8-6), RPI: 24, SOS: 32] Hmm ... good thing the last two are at Northwestern and home to Penn State, because IU might want to get both to feel completely safe after dropping its third in the last four, fading after halftime at Michigan State. Who knew the best nonconference win would be over Southern Illinois, which is a gift that keeps on giving for the Hoosiers. The win over Wisconsin also looks good on the mantel.

Work left to do:

Illinois [21-9 (9-6), RPI: 31, SOS: 25] A good performance at Penn State leaves the Illini in pretty good shape. Can they go to Iowa and take care of business to really look on their way? That's a huge game, as there is a possible cluster of teams that will end at 9-7. Illinois beat Bradley, but has lost to Xavier. A 9-7 mark and a semifinals trip in Chicago could be enough with the computer profile hanging in there, but it would be better not to mess around, clinching at least a tie for third.

Purdue [18-10 (7-7), RPI: 47, SOS: 28] Couldn't get it done at Iowa, but did win at Northwestern to put 9-7 squarely in sight. Where does that leave the Boilermakers, though? Even if they beat Minnesota and Northwestern at home, that won't help the computer numbers. Nonconference wins over Virginia, DePaul and Oklahoma are solid, but not spectacular. The Boilers very well might need an upset in the B10 quarters to have a legit claim.

Michigan [19-10 (7-7), RPI: 55, SOS: 53] Well, Michigan did what it needed to do, winning at Minnesota to take control of its fate. The Wolverines have Michigan State and an already-wrapped-up-the-league Ohio State at home to close, so the chances are there. Win both and we can talk. There is no marquee win yet in the profile, and the Wolverines were splattered in several games against name opponents. A mediocre computer profile fueled by a lack of road wins isn't helping, either.

Iowa [16-12 (8-6), RPI: 80, SOS: 64] For the sake of being complete, we'll add Iowa, this season's Stanford. It's plausible that the Hawkeyes could get to 10-6 (at Penn State, vs. Illinois left), but where does that leave them after a gruesome nonconference performance where the best win was over ... Toledo? Iowa State? Cornell?? If they get to 10-6, we can start to look at what they need to do in the B10 tourney, although my gut sense is that they would need to make the final and have knocked off Ohio State or Wisconsin on the way to have any real claim.

Dallas Cowboys Super Bowl Odds

Will he or won't he?  Now that the Dallas Cowboys have a new head coach in Wade Phillips, the big question will be: Does Terrell Owens stay with the team.

Jerry Jones continues to suggest that Terrell Owens will remain with the team.

"I've said that he's back, he's here, he's under contract," Jones said. "In the interviews I've just been through (to hire a new coach), it was very clear to me how highly he's thought of and how much of an impact he had on our offensive success."

Just to be sure though, Terrell Owens cleared out his locker and removed his name plate.

Terrell Owens was among the Cowboys most productive players this past season, catching 85 passes for 1,180 yards and a league-best 13 touchdowns.

But T.O. is due a $3 million roster bonus in June, then a $5 million salary this season. Cutting him before then would save a lot of money and headaches.

Aside from the questions surrounding Terrell Owens, the oddsmakers at MySportsbook.com have concerns over starting quarterback Tony Romo's state of mind and whether he will remain a starting quarterback.  It is also not known how players will adjust to new head coach, Wade Phillips.

Here are the football odds as seen at MySportsbook.com and subject to change after February 10, 2007 if not locked in prior to that date.
